Lymphedema Massage Therapy

About Lymphedema Massage Therapy

We serve clients who have Lymphedema in and around Richmond, Virginia. Lymphedema Massage Therapy, also known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) or Lymphatic Massage, uses specialized gentle, rhythmic skin stretch techniques to stimulate the lymphatic system. This hands-on treatment helps move the swelling from the affected areas and out of the body.

Issues Treated

Our specialized Lymphedema Massage Therapy offers targeted relief for those who have discomfort, stiffness, and reduced movement due to swelling. By gently stimulating the lymphatic system, we manually draw the fluid through the body, reducing edema (swelling) and helping you feel more ease.

Most people need a combination of MLD, compression therapy, exercise, and skin care to best manage their swelling.

Who Is It For?

Lymphedema Massage Therapy is an excellent choice for those managing primary lymphedema or secondary lymphedema due to surgery, cancer treatment, lipedema, chronic vein issues, or trauma.

We typically see clients who have early stage LE or who have finished Complete Decongestive Therapy and need occasional maintenance and who are under care with a health care provider. We do not currently offer Complete Decongestive Therapy with bandaging.

Who is it NOT for?

Lymphedema Massage Therapy uses the body’s circulatory and renal system to help process fluid and cellular waste. Some medical conditions cause increased stress to these systems. Due to increased risk for complications, we are unable to perform Lymphedema Massage if you have any of the following:

  • Lymphoma
  • Undergoing active cancer treatment
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Arterial insufficiency or other arterial condition
  • Acute renal kidney failure
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Blood clots
  • Cellulitis or other bacterial infection

We would love to be part of your care team for Lymphedema Massage Therapy at Nimbus Massage and are happy to coordinate with your other care providers. We offer free phone consultations if you would like more information. You may also check the FAQs for more information.

The Process

Have you decided on getting a Lymphedema Massage? Swell 😉 here’s our process:

  1. Consultation: Your therapeutic journey begins with a consultation, where we discuss your concerns, preferences, and overall picture of health that may affect your massage. Lymphedema Massage Therapy may not be appropriate for all people with lymphedema, so we will go through a thorough intake process and may request medical clearance in some cases.
  2. Personalized treatment: Based on the consultation, we will create a customized plan tailored to your specific needs. Because of the way the Lymphatic System and Lymphedema work, we will create a routing map unique to your situation. This does require specialized training and that is why only our Certified Lymphedema Therapists offer this service.
  3. Table Time: During your session, we’ll perform the hands-on work that we planned during the intake and planning process. While most people receive MLD on a massage table, we also offer seated services and will work with you in a way that is accessible to you.

The Benefits

Lymphedema typically occurs when the body can’t keep up with its normal fluid processing. The system gets overwhelmed and backed up due to some sort of injury or vessel problem. Then the fluid stays around in the tissue waiting for processing and that creates swelling.

Because the system itself is impaired, it simply can’t keep up with a normal level of fluid movement in the damaged area(s). MLD manually moves the fluid through the challenged areas so the fluid can be processed more quickly.

Most people feel less pain, less pressure, and less stiffness as the fluid moves. It can also help improve skin issues, scar tissue, and vulnerability to infection. MLD should typically be paired with compression and exercise for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lymphedema massage painful or uncomfortable?

No, lymphedema massage is generally a gentle and soothing therapy. The therapist uses very light, rhythmic touch to activate the lymphatic system, and you can communicate your comfort level throughout the session to ensure it’s not painful or uncomfortable.

Will lymphedema massage make my lymphedema worse?

Will lymphedema massage make my lymphedema worse? Lymphedema massage is designed to alleviate and manage lymphedema, not exacerbate it. When performed by a qualified therapist, it can help reduce swelling and improve your condition.

How can I prepare for my first Lymphedema Management session?

Fill out your intake forms in advance and arrive a few minutes prior to your session so that we can review the information with you. If you have a complex medical history which requires a long intake process, some of your appointment time may be used reviewing your health history. Think about your goals, focus areas, and things that have/haven’t worked for you in the past.

Are there any contraindications or risks associated with lymphedema massage?

Lymphedema massage should be avoided if you have active infections, blood clots, or certain
medical conditions. Always discuss your medical history with your therapist to ensure the
treatment is safe for you.

How will I feel after the massage?

After a lymphedema massage, most people feel more relaxed, freer, and lighter. You might
experience increased urination, which is a natural response as your body eliminates excess
fluids. It’s essential to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

How soon can I expect to see results in reducing my swelling?

The number of sessions needed varies, but most individuals notice at least minor improvements
very quickly. Within the first session we usually see swelling reduction, less stiffness, and less
discomfort. Consistency and good self-care is key.

Can I resume my regular activities immediately after the massage?

Yes, you can generally resume the activities you and your health care provider have agreed are
safe and healthy for you. Light movement, like walking, can compound the effects of MLD.
