Chronic Pain is a complex issue and should be addressed by a medical professional. But for many, massage is one management tool that can make a big difference in feeling better and living better.
Chronic Pain Syndromes
If you have a chronic pain syndrome, massage is not a cure. However, many people find massage for chronic pain to be an effective method of reducing overall pain, improving sleep, and regaining some stamina and mobility for better daily functioning. Some people also find that they are able to work with their doctors to reduce their medication load. We recommend starting with a 30 minute session if you have never had massage before, or if you have had a flare-up after a massage before.
If you have a degenerative issue, massage is not going to reverse it, but it can help ease pain and stiffness and maintain flexibility. Some people use massage for prehab prior to joint replacement surgery (or to help them put off surgery for longer). We recommend starting with a targeted approach focusing solely on your problem area (30 minutes for arm, hand, leg, or foot; 60 minutes for neck, back, hip, shoulder, or TMJ).
Repetitive Motion or Past Injury
If you have a repetitive motion or other injury, massage may be able to significantly improve pain, reduce scar tissue, and restore movement. We recommend starting with a targeted approach focusing solely on your problem area (30 minutes for arm, hand, leg, or foot; 60 minutes for neck, back, hip, shoulder, or TMJ).
If you have chronic headaches or muscular tension worsened by stress, massage may be able to reduce the frequency and severity of your flare-ups. We recommend a 60 minute full-body session with focus on your problem area(s).

Some of the techniques your therapist may employ during a Massage for Chronic Pain include: Myofascial Release, Stretching, Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Connective Tissue Massage, Ortho-Bionomy, and Swedish Massage.
